NBA Star Danilo Gallinari Retires After Championship in Puerto Rico

UPDATE: Former NBA All-Star Danilo Gallinari has officially announced his retirement from basketball after a triumphant season in Puerto Rico, where he led the Vaqueros de Bayamon to the BSN Championship. This surprising announcement comes just days after Gallinari’s dramatic performance culminated in him being named Finals MVP.

Gallinari’s journey in Puerto Rico has been nothing short of remarkable. The 37-year-old, who has earned over $200 million in his career, took to the court after his final NBA season with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2024. “I needed basketball,” Gallinari said, reflecting on his decision to play one last season in the league. “It was pure joy.”

This unexpected chapter began when he connected with Puerto Rican basketball legend Carlos Arroyo, who convinced him to join the Vaqueros while waiting for interest from NBA teams. Gallinari played a pivotal role in the team’s success, averaging over 35 minutes per game and showcasing his skills at a high level.

However, Gallinari’s time in Puerto Rico wasn’t without its challenges. On July 31, 2024, a family outing took a terrifying turn when his wife, Eleonora Boi, was bitten by a shark while swimming at Isla Verde Beach. Fortunately, both she and their unborn child were unharmed. “It was very shocking,” Gallinari recounted, emphasizing the lasting impact of the incident.

In an exclusive interview with ESPN, Gallinari candidly shared the origins of chaos surrounding a brawl involving fellow NBA player DeMarcus Cousins during a game in June. The viral incident led to Cousins’ ejection and suspension from the Puerto Rican league, but Gallinari admitted, “Everything started because I poked him twice in the eye.”

Despite the controversy, Gallinari’s on-court success overshadowed his off-court dramas. His leadership and dedication to the game not only won him a championship but also captured the hearts of Puerto Rican fans. Arroyo praised Gallinari, stating, “The fans loved him. He just galvanized everything that we had.”

As he steps away from basketball, Gallinari looks forward to spending more time with his growing family. “I want to be able to play with them at a high intensity,” he said, expressing his desire to create lasting memories with his children.

Gallinari’s retirement marks the end of a significant era in his life, filled with both triumphs and trials. His legacy as a dedicated player and a beloved figure in international basketball will undoubtedly endure.

As fans reflect on his storied career, one thing is clear: Danilo Gallinari has left an indelible mark on the sport and will be remembered not only for his skills but for his passion and commitment to the game he loves.
