UPDATE: Nationwide protests are igniting in response to the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman, by an ICE agent in Minneapolis earlier this week. Demonstrators are gathering in cities across the country, demanding accountability and justice in a rapidly unfolding situation.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when immigration officers claim Good attempted to ram her vehicle into agents. The Trump administration has defended the officer, stating he acted in self-defense. However, this defense has sparked outrage and mobilized thousands to voice their opposition to federal immigration enforcement.
On Sunday, hundreds of protesters converged in Pittsburgh’s South Side for a rally titled “ICE Out For Good.” Attendees wielded signs condemning ICE’s actions and highlighting the need for justice for Good. “Somebody was murdered in broad daylight by an agent of the state,” said Paul Johnson, a demonstrator from Lawrenceville. “They’ve done nothing wrong… they were only trying to protect their civil rights.”
The emotional toll of the shooting is resonating deeply with the community. “I’m just really sad about the whole situation,” added Anna Haughwout from McKeesport. “It’s just tragic for the poor woman who was killed, and it’s tragic for the officer that killed her.”
Amidst the growing unrest, Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor has reaffirmed the city’s position of non-cooperation with ICE, further fueling the protests. Demonstrators also gathered at the Westmoreland County Courthouse and the Washington County Courthouse, voicing concerns over federal actions. “At this point, we are all very worried that the federal government is essentially murdering protesters in the streets,” claimed protester Abigail Graham-Pardus.
The call for justice intensified as protesters demanded accountability for the shooting. “We’re here for justice for Renee Good, who was trying to drive away in her car,” stated protester Sharon Laffey. “No police officer should shoot somebody three times when they’re trying to drive away.”
The protests reflect a significant national divide on immigration policies and law enforcement practices. As demonstrations unfold, the spotlight remains on the actions of federal agents and the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement in communities.
With tensions high and more rallies anticipated, citizens are urged to remain informed and engaged. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts and updates on this developing story.
