Nathan Lane’s F-Bomb Scene Almost Cut from ‘Only Murders’ Finale

UPDATE: Nathan Lane’s hilarious improvised line in the upcoming finale of Only Murders in the Building almost didn’t make the cut! Actor Michael Cyril Creighton, who plays Howard, revealed that Lane’s audacious question, “Howard, are you fucking that thing?” could have been left on the cutting room floor due to its explicit content. However, its sheer comedic value ensured its inclusion, making it a standout moment in the penultimate episode.

During an interview with DECIDER, Creighton explained how Lane, who reprises his role as Teddy Dimas, brought his improv skills to life in a scene alongside main characters Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short. The episode, titled “LESTR,” is set to air on October 28 at 12 a.m. ET, and promises to deliver a thrilling cliffhanger as the series heads towards its fifth season finale.

Creighton shared that Lane’s improvised delivery was so compelling that it became essential to end the scene on a high note. “It’s just too funny, it’s the only way to end that scene,” he noted. He also highlighted that the improvisation went on for so long, thanks to the comedic contributions of fellow cast member Jackie Hoffman, creating an unforgettable filming experience.

The episode not only highlights Lane’s talent but also delves deeper into Howard’s character, revealing emotional backstory tied to his relationships with pets and hobbies. Creighton expressed how the opportunity to share a heartfelt scene with Martin felt transformative, stating, “I don’t think it was scripted that I cry that much, but it was one of the greatest things I’ve been able to do on the show.”

As anticipation builds for the finale, fans can expect a thrilling culmination of the season’s storyline. Creighton teased that Howard uncovers a crucial detail that leads the gang into a deeper mystery. “When I read Episode 10, I was like, ‘Wow, these writers are brilliant,’” he said, hinting at an episode packed with surprises.

Viewers can currently stream the first nine episodes of Only Murders in the Building Season 5 on Hulu. For those new to the platform, Hulu is offering a 30-day free trial for its basic plan, after which the subscription will be $10.99/month. An ad-free experience is available for $18.99/month, while bundles with Disney+ start at $12.99/month.

With the finale just hours away, fans are eagerly speculating on how the series will wrap up its latest mysteries.
