UPDATE: The Mount Carmel Caravan has just secured their 17th state title in an electrifying matchup against the Oswego Panthers, winning 20-3 at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb on December 3, 2025. Junior defensive back Cullen Winters made a pivotal play that turned the tide with a blocked punt returned for a touchdown by Gavin Conjar.
This championship marks a historic achievement for the Caravan, as they clinch their first title in Class 8A while maintaining an impressive 14-0 record. Winters, who had previously missed his sophomore year due to a back injury, emerged as a key player in this decisive victory.
Winters recounted his game-changing moment, saying, “I saw the chance at a block was there, so I did it again and I got it.” His block sparked momentum in the third quarter, propelling Mount Carmel to victory and solidifying their legacy.
Senior quarterback Emmett Dowling also contributed significantly, scoring both a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown to Marshaun Thornton, effectively sealing the game late in the fourth quarter.
Despite freezing temperatures and a strong defensive effort from Oswego, Mount Carmel’s special teams played a crucial role in securing the victory. Senior punter Dean Kemph executed a perfect punt that pinned Oswego at their own 1-yard line, setting up Dowling’s 1-yard TD keeper for a halftime lead of 6-3.
“We practice special teams a ton during the week,” Kemph stated. “We were just in the right place at the right time.” The Caravan’s defense was exceptional, limiting Oswego to just three first downs and forcing four consecutive incompletions during a critical moment in the game.
Mount Carmel coach Jordan Lynch celebrated this achievement, highlighting the program’s legacy and the numerous family connections among the players. “We have a lot of legacy kids,” Lynch noted, emphasizing the deep-rooted tradition in the program.
For Cullen Winters, who has two brothers that previously played for Mount Carmel, this championship feels particularly special. “After having to watch all the guys last year, this is a great feeling being part of this legacy,” he expressed.
As the season concludes, all eyes are on the Caravan, who have once again proven their dominance in Illinois high school football. Fans and families alike are already celebrating this historic win and looking forward to what next season will bring.
