BREAKING: Montcalm Community College (MCC) has just announced a remarkable enrollment surge of 16.2%, reaching 2,035 students this fall, a significant rebound from previous years marked by the pandemic. President Bradley Barrick expressed his astonishment at the college’s swift recovery during a board meeting on October 3, 2023, highlighting that this growth makes MCC the fastest-growing community college in Michigan.
This enrollment spike is a testament to MCC’s efforts to adapt and thrive, with a noted increase of 44% since fall 2020, when only 1,414 students were enrolled. Barrick stated, “It’s mind-blowing. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re going to lead the state again in enrollment in the spring.”
As of now, 1,654 students are already registered for the upcoming spring semester, indicating a 16.54% increase from the same time last year. The college is also experiencing a significant rise in total contact hours, which are up 18.83%, directly impacting state funding.
The number of dual-enrolled high school students has skyrocketed, with 704 students currently enrolled, surpassing last year’s total of 664. This marks a staggering 134% increase in dual enrollment over the past five years.
MCC is also expanding its reach into Ionia County, which has become a vital source of enrollment growth. Notably, Belding High School is leading with 88 students enrolled, followed by other schools in the area. Barrick is optimistic that this trend will continue, stating, “We just continue to expand our footprint and really build that relationship with Ionia County.”
Board Vice Chair Carol Deuling-Ravell raised concerns about transportation for students from Ionia, which is located 23 miles from MCC’s Sidney campus. Discussions are underway to explore partnerships for physical space in Ionia to better serve these students. Barrick confirmed that they are on the “front end” of these conversations, aiming for solutions that are cost-effective and beneficial for students.
As enrollment numbers trend upward, MCC is poised to break its own records, nearing its all-time high of 2,328 students from fall 2009. The college’s commitment to attracting new students continues to be a priority, ensuring that they meet the evolving needs of the community.
This news is not just about numbers; it reflects a growing opportunity for students in the region and a commitment from MCC to provide accessible education. As the college gears up for the upcoming semester, the community watches closely for what these developments will mean for education in the area.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as MCC continues its impressive growth trajectory.
