UPDATE: A Milford, Connecticut man has been sentenced for making serious threats against a federal law enforcement officer and their family. Hamilton Clark Smith, aged 61, was sentenced on April 22, 2024, by U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala to 43 days in prison—time already served—and will face one year of probation.
The case stems from alarming communications Smith sent on January 10 and 11, 2023, where he reportedly threatened to harm and kill a Deputy U.S. Marshal. Smith was arrested on January 12, 2023, and remained in custody until February 16, 2023, when he was released on bond.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, highlighting the seriousness with which such threats are treated against those serving the public.
This sentencing comes at a time when threats against law enforcement officers are increasingly scrutinized, emphasizing the risks they encounter daily. The decision by Judge Nagala reflects the judiciary’s commitment to uphold safety for federal agents and their families.
As Smith begins his probation, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant against any forms of intimidation or threats directed at law enforcement. The case serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by those in service to the community.
