UPDATE: In a stunning display of power, the No. 3 Michigan hockey team decisively defeated the defending national champions, No. 2 Western Michigan, with a score of 4-0 earlier today at Yost Ice Arena. This victory keeps Michigan’s record unblemished at 7-0, marking their best start since 1979.
The Wolverines burst out of the gates, scoring just 1:50 into the game. Freshman sensation Jayden Perron showcased his skill by converting a slick pass from Nick Moldenhauer, firing a quick shot that found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
The matchup turned into a battle of special teams, with Michigan’s top-ranked power play capitalizing on two opportunities. In stark contrast, Western Michigan struggled, finishing 0 for 8 on the power play, and now sits at a dismal 2 for 30 for the season. Michigan’s Michael Hage extended the lead to 2-0 at the 8:12 mark of the second period, scoring his sixth goal after a scramble in front of the net.
With the Wolverines firmly in control, Hage further contributed to the scoreline by assisting on Michigan’s third goal. Freshman Henry Mews unleashed a shot from the blue line that deflected off Hage’s helmet, landing perfectly for freshman Adam Valentini, who netted the goal just 1:37 into the third period.
As the clock wound down, junior forward Garrett Schifsky added an empty-netter, sealing the victory with just 10 seconds left. The standout performance of the night came from freshman goalie Jack Ivankovic, who made 32 saves and has allowed only seven goals in his first seven games, showcasing a remarkable start to his college career.
Michigan’s defense was tested repeatedly, especially in the first period, as the Broncos launched several high-danger chances. Notably, Western Michigan’s Bobby Cowan hit the post late in the first period, denying what could have been a momentum-shifting goal.
Looking ahead, these two powerhouse teams will face off again tomorrow night at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, where Western Michigan will seek redemption in this home-and-home series. As Michigan continues to dominate, fans and analysts alike will be eager to see if they can maintain their undefeated streak.
