Mexican Opposition Leader Urges U.S. Collaboration to Combat Cartels

URGENT UPDATE: Mexican opposition leader Alejandro Moreno Cardenas has called for immediate collaboration with the United States to dismantle powerful drug cartels wreaking havoc across the nation. Speaking to local journalist Ciro Gomez, Moreno emphasized the dire need for joint operations, stating, “We need to destroy cartels because they are destroying our country, hence the collaboration.”

Moreno pointed out that the U.S. possesses the necessary technology and equipment to aid in this fight. “Who has the capacity? The U.S. government,” he added, highlighting the urgency of addressing this escalating crisis.

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has reiterated her administration’s stance against allowing U.S. troops on Mexican soil, despite ongoing discussions about cooperation. She confirmed that during a recent phone call with former President Donald Trump, he proposed U.S. military involvement, which she firmly rejected. “Organized crime can’t be equated to terrorism,” Sheinbaum stated, reaffirming Mexico’s position against intervention.

In a significant context, reports indicate that the Trump administration is pushing for U.S. forces to accompany Mexican counterparts in raids targeting suspected fentanyl labs. The New York Times reported that this request, initially made early last year, has resurfaced in light of recent geopolitical events, including the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro on January 3.

Officials in both countries are under increasing pressure to reach an agreement, with some U.S. lawmakers advocating for drone strikes against identified drug labs. However, locating these labs remains a complex challenge, and U.S. intelligence agencies, including the CIA, are currently conducting covert drone flights over Mexico to identify potential sites. The intelligence gathered is then shared with Mexican forces, many of whom have received training from U.S. counterparts for executing raids.

Despite the complexities, Washington has proposed that U.S. forces could assist in these raids while allowing Mexican authorities to maintain operational control. Sheinbaum acknowledged that while significant progress has been made in security matters under her leadership, further collaboration and respect between the nations are essential.

As discussions continue and pressure mounts, the urgency to combat the rampant drug cartel violence in Mexico has never been more critical. What happens next will be pivotal in shaping the security landscape of both nations. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
