UPDATE: New York Mets pitcher Tylor Megill has undergone urgent Tommy John surgery, a significant blow to the team announced by manager Carlos Mendoza just before their crucial three-game series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The surgery took place in Los Angeles on Monday, and it is expected Megill will miss most, if not all, of the 2026 season.
“This is tough for him personally,” Mendoza stated. “We’re all wishing him a quick recovery. It’s going to be a while before he takes the mound again.” The 30-year-old has not played since June 14, when he faced a challenging outing against Tampa Bay, allowing six runs in just 3.2 innings.
Megill was initially placed on the 15-day injured list following an elbow sprain on June 17 and subsequently moved to the 60-day IL on July 8. His absence is particularly felt as the Mets’ pitching rotation has struggled significantly, dropping from a solid fourth place in the majors with a 3.38 ERA before the All-Star break to a concerning 24th place with a 5.10 ERA in the second half of the season.
In 14 starts this season, Megill recorded a 5-5 record with a 3.95 ERA before being sidelined. He attempted a rehab assignment in August but was shut down again due to renewed elbow tightness.
Megill has been a part of the Mets organization since being drafted in the eighth round in 2018, and with two more seasons of arbitration eligibility remaining, his long-term future remains uncertain.
Mendoza emphasized the impact of Megill’s loss on the team’s depth, stating, “Obviously we’ll miss him, when you’re talking about depth. It’s so unfortunate, but our job right now is to get him back on the field as quick as possible.”
As the Mets prepare for a pivotal game against the Cubs, they find themselves tied with the Reds for the final wild-card spot in the National League. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the Mets navigate this setback and what it means for their playoff chances this season.
