McNew’s Unlimited in North Platte, Nebraska, hosted its inaugural JR Tech Night on March 15, 2024. This free, hands-on event provided students from kindergarten through eighth grade with a unique opportunity to engage with various aspects of technology and the automotive service industry. Attendees rotated through five interactive stations, each designed to offer insight into the essential work of service technicians.
Participants had the chance to explore the components of a golf cart, learn about engines, electrical systems, and drivetrains, as well as handle tools commonly used by professionals in the field. The engaging setup aimed to spark interest in the trades among young students, promoting exposure to potential career paths that are integral to the economy.
Owner Nick McNew emphasized the importance of introducing youth to skilled trades. He stated, “I think it’s super important for the youth to get involved in every tech industry. From automotive and mechanics to painting, plumbing, and HVAC, all of that stuff is very important. These are trades that AI are not going to take over, and it’s just important to know how to work as a team, especially on diagnosing, tearing things down, and assembling.”
The event was designed not only to educate but also to create a safe and supervised environment where young people could discover the intricacies of automotive service. Organizers aimed to foster curiosity and encourage students to consider careers that require technical skills and teamwork.
By offering such events, McNew’s Unlimited is taking a proactive approach to address the growing skills gap in the trades. The interactive nature of the stations allowed students to gain practical experience and ask questions, thereby enhancing their understanding of the fields they may wish to pursue in the future.
As the demand for skilled technicians continues to rise, initiatives like JR Tech Night are crucial in shaping the next generation of professionals. With a focus on hands-on learning and practical application, this event marks a significant step in promoting technical education among youth in the community.
The positive response from participants indicates a strong interest in future events, potentially paving the way for more initiatives aimed at engaging students in various technical fields.
