Mariners Sign Naylor to Five-Year Deal in Offseason Kickoff

UPDATE: The Seattle Mariners have officially signed first baseman Josh Naylor to a five-year deal, marking the first major move of the 2025-26 MLB offseason. This signing comes after the Mariners’ heartbreaking loss in Game 7 of the ALCS and is expected to significantly impact their lineup moving forward.

As the winter trades heat up, Naylor’s return is a critical move for a franchise that has struggled to find a long-term solution at first base for nearly two decades. The Mariners’ front office made it clear that re-signing Naylor was a top priority, and they have now backed that commitment with a lucrative contract.

Naylor, who was acquired from Arizona at the trade deadline, dazzled fans by hitting .299/.341/.490 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs in just 54 games for Seattle, contributing a solid 2.2 WAR. His overall performance for the 2025 season included a combined batting line of .295/.353/.462 with 20 home runs, showcasing his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.

The Mariners have faced challenges attracting free-agent hitters due to the pitcher-friendly nature of T-Mobile Park. However, Naylor has expressed his love for playing there, with impressive numbers that include a .304 batting average and a .534 slugging percentage over 43 career games at the venue.

Naylor’s high-contact hitting style is crucial for a Mariners lineup that has struggled with strikeouts. He finished with the 17th-best strikeout rate among qualified hitters in 2025, making him a valuable asset. His unique playing style—boasting a low chase rate yet a nearly league-average walk rate—makes him a dependable player as he enters this new contract.

This deal, which runs through Naylor’s age 33 season, presents some long-term risk, but for a team eyeing a World Series run in 2026, bringing Naylor back was essential. Mariners fans can expect a consistent performance from a player who has steadily risen in productivity, evidenced by his 3.1 WAR in 2025, a career high.

As the offseason progresses, experts like David Schoenfield will continue to analyze the implications of this signing, providing updates on the evolving landscape of MLB free agency. Fans are encouraged to keep an eye on this developing story as more signings and trades unfold.
