A man has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 46-year-old man in Logan Heights on July 4, 2023. According to the San Diego Police Department, Ruben Perez, 46, was taken into custody in the Midway District shortly after 10:00 a.m. on suspicion of murder in the death of Jason Poindexter.
Police responded to reports of an assault that occurred around 1:30 a.m. on July 4, discovering Poindexter severely injured just outside a homeless encampment near a Walmart store at the intersection of Commercial and 21st streets. Despite the efforts of paramedics to transport him to a hospital, Poindexter was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Prior to law enforcement’s arrival, witnesses reported seeing a stocky bald man and a thin woman, identified as possibly homeless, leaving the area in different directions. This detail was shared by San Diego police Lieutenant Lou Maggi during a press briefing.
On July 10, authorities arrested a different suspect, a 45-year-old woman, who was initially booked into Las Colinas women’s jail in Santee. However, she has since been released pending further investigation, and her identity has not been disclosed.
As of now, police have not revealed a motive for the stabbing or the specifics that led to identifying Perez as the primary suspect. Investigations continue as authorities work to piece together the events surrounding this tragic incident.
