UPDATE: The race for New York City mayor heats up as Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, maintains a significant lead ahead of Election Day on November 4, 2023. Recent polling data reveals that Mamdani captures approximately 44 percent of likely voter support, while independent candidate Andrew Cuomo trails with around 39 percent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa sits at 16 percent.
Polling firm AtlasIntel conducted a survey of 2,404 likely voters from Friday to Sunday, confirming Mamdani’s lead with a 2 percentage point margin of error. This comes just days before New Yorkers head to the polls, and the urgency of the election is palpable.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist and New York Assemblyman, previously defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary. Cuomo’s decision to run as an independent adds complexity to the race, as he seeks to reclaim his former role as governor, facing backlash from his past administration. Sliwa, while trailing, remains a candidate to watch.
Key endorsements bolster Mamdani’s campaign, including support from New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Notably, independent Senator Bernie Sanders has also thrown his weight behind Mamdani. In contrast, former President Donald Trump endorsed Cuomo, labeling Mamdani a “communist” and threatening to withdraw federal funding for the city should Mamdani win.
Multiple polls reinforce Mamdani’s strong position. A Fox News Poll conducted from October 24 to October 28 shows Mamdani at 47 percent, Cuomo at 31 percent, and Sliwa at 15 percent, based on a sample of 1,107 registered voters with a 3 percentage point margin of error. Further, a Marist poll shows Mamdani leading Cuomo 48 percent to 32 percent among likely voters.
Polls will open at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. on Election Day. Early voting has concluded, and absentee ballots must be postmarked by Tuesday or returned in person by the close of polls.
As the clock ticks down, all eyes are on the candidates. Will Mamdani maintain his lead, or can Cuomo’s late campaign efforts shift voter sentiment? Stay tuned for further updates as this critical election unfolds.
