UPDATE: Philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott has announced a groundbreaking $7.1 billion in donations to nonprofits for 2025, a dramatic increase from her previous years of giving. This significant surge in charitable giving highlights Scott’s commitment to supporting communities in need and comes at a time when many organizations are struggling for funds.
In an essay published on her website today, Scott stated, “This dollar total will likely be reported in the news, but any dollar amount is a vanishingly tiny fraction of the personal expressions of care being shared into communities this year.” This year’s contributions follow her earlier donations of $2.6 billion in 2024 and $2.1 billion in 2023, bringing her total charitable contributions since 2019 to an astonishing $26.3 billion.
Scott’s philanthropic approach is notable for its unrestricted nature, allowing nonprofits to utilize the funds as they deem necessary. Her giving has captured widespread attention, as it often exceeds the annual budgets of recipient organizations. Currently, Scott’s net worth stands at approximately $33 billion, primarily derived from her shares in Amazon following her divorce from founder Jeff Bezos.
Earlier today, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) announced they have collectively received $783 million from Scott in 2025, showcasing her focus on equity in education. Research from Marybeth Gasman, a professor at Rutgers University, highlights that this year’s contributions to HBCUs surpass her previous donations in 2020.
Scott’s donations are particularly impactful as they come without the typical requirements for reporting or specific project applications, setting her apart from conventional donors. For instance, UNCF, the largest provider of scholarships to minority students, received $70 million from Scott, which will be invested in a collective endowment for HBCUs. Additionally, the Native Forward Scholars Fund has also benefited from a $50 million donation.
Scott’s unique approach has allowed organizations to focus on their missions without the burden of strict accountability. The Center for Effective Philanthropy found in a recent study that recipients of Scott’s donations have effectively managed the funds without facing significant challenges.
In a powerful statement, Kim Mazzuca, CEO of the California-based nonprofit 10,000 Degrees, expressed her joy upon receiving a first-time gift of $42 million from Scott earlier this year. Mazzuca explained that this unexpected funding, which is nearly double their annual budget, will enable the organization to expand its scholarship and mentoring programs for low-income students.
Scott has consistently emphasized the importance of recognizing one’s agency in creating change. She referenced a prophecy from the Hopi Tribe, stating, “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for,” a sentiment echoed by Mazzuca as a source of empowerment for her organization and the students they support.
This latest surge in donations comes as Scott continues to shift her focus towards “mission-aligned” investments, supporting initiatives that seek to create a positive social impact rather than maximizing financial returns.
As Scott’s 2025 donations demonstrate her unwavering commitment to philanthropy, the landscape of charitable giving may undergo significant changes. Donors and nonprofits alike will be watching closely as Scott’s approach inspires others to reconsider how they support their communities.
