UPDATE: Lockport junior Natalie Bochantin received the prestigious Porter Pride award during this season’s volleyball celebration, recognizing her outstanding leadership and positivity. This accolade was confirmed just hours after her team triumphed over the host Joliet West Tigers in a thrilling sectional championship match.
Bochantin, a 5-foot-7 setter, expressed her gratitude, stating, “It made me feel just really appreciated.” Her commitment to uplifting her teammates both on and off the court has clearly resonated, as evidenced by her teammates’ decision to honor her with this award.
Last night, Lockport clinched a dramatic victory with scores of 21-25, 25-20, 25-21. The Porters now advance to face Oak Park-River Forest at 7 p.m. on Monday in the Hinsdale Central Supersectional. Senior Bridget Ferriter shone brightly with 19 kills, showcasing her skills on her 18th birthday. “It was really exciting,” Ferriter noted. “After we lost the first game, we had to step it up. I think we really did.”
Bochantin played a pivotal role in the victory, leading the team with 29 assists and 9 digs. She also contributed an ace, highlighting her all-around performance as the team heads into the next round of playoffs. “Yeah, it was a great match,” Bochantin reflected. “After losing to them earlier in the season, it was pretty cool to come back with such high energy.”
Notably, Bochantin’s season statistics are impressive, including 699 assists, 216 digs, and a team-best 63 aces. However, her coach, Nick Mraz, emphasized that her impact transcends numbers. “Porter Pride means you pretty much do everything the right way,” Mraz stated. “For us, she’s the energy.”
Ferriter, a senior outside hitter, expressed her admiration for Bochantin, calling her “exciting” and commending her unwavering support. “She’ll never get mad at you, even when you mess up,” Ferriter said, highlighting the trust they have built on the court.
As the team prepares for their next challenge, Bochantin remains focused on fostering a positive environment. She often initiates fun team activities, like “funny shirt day,” to keep spirits high. “It’s important to keep the positive vibes up during practice,” she said with a laugh.
With their eyes set on the championship, the Lockport Porters are riding a wave of momentum, fueled by the recognition of their outstanding players like Bochantin. Fans can look forward to an electrifying match against Oak Park-River Forest, as this talented team aims for further success in the postseason.
