BREAKING: Gaetano Arienti, a resident of Great Barrington, reflects on the life of his childhood friend, Pope Pius XI, following the pontiff’s recent death. The emotional connection runs deep for Arienti, who shared boyhood memories with the late Pope, born Achille Ratti, in Desio, Italy.
In a heartfelt interview, the 77-year-old Arienti recalls their playful days together, highlighting the Pope’s vibrant spirit and strong character. “We were just kids running around,” Arienti said, reminiscing about their shared childhood. He expressed his desire to return to Desio someday to revisit the places that shaped his youth.
Arienti, who immigrated to the United States on May 13, 1882, alongside three cousins, was unaware of Ratti’s path toward the priesthood until he learned of his friend’s elevation to cardinal and later, to Pope. “It was a surprise to hear he had become Pope,” Arienti shared, underscoring the bond they shared despite the distance.
The late pontiff’s parents were involved in the silk industry in Desio, a detail Arienti has long believed. Many locals worked in the silk mills, contributing to the town’s economy and community life. Arienti’s late brother is also rumored to have been in the same class as the future Pope, deepening the local ties to the Vatican.
As a retired mason, Arienti has spent his years following Vatican news with particular interest. His family, including his wife, five children, and a son who serves on the Great Barrington Police Department, carries on his legacy of connection to their Italian roots and the Catholic Church.
With the Pope’s passing, many are reminded of the personal histories intertwined with global events. Arienti’s reflections serve as a poignant reminder of the human stories behind the headlines. As the world mourns, his memories remain a testament to friendship and shared history, resonating with those who understand the profound impact of such a loss.
