Local Hoop Shoot Contest Advances Young Athletes to Districts

URGENT UPDATE: Local basketball enthusiasts shine as the annual Hoop Shoot free throw contest unfolds at Hall Gym, Salisbury, on January 11, 2025. A total of 22 contestants aged 8 to 13 showcased their skills, vying for a spot in the district competition in High Point on January 24.

Debbie Martin, the publicity chair for the Salisbury Elks Lodge #699, expressed excitement over the event’s turnout. “We had a great turnout this year. The local talent did not disappoint the family and friends that were there for support and encouragement,” she stated.

Each contestant faced the pressure of shooting 25 free throws, with 10 in the first round and 15 in the finals. The competition was fierce, with young athletes showcasing remarkable poise and skill under pressure.

The first-place winners, who now advance to the district competition, include:

  • Boys 8-9: Bryson Donis (1st), Casen Doby (2nd)
  • Boys 10-11: Graham Davis (1st), Blake Adams (2nd)
  • Boys 12-13: Jaxon Harris (1st), Frank Adams (2nd)
  • Girls 8-9: Amyiah Terzi (1st), Jordyn Jones (2nd)
  • Girls 10-11: Keianna Holiday (1st), Merritt Menees (2nd)
  • Girls 12-13: Adalynn Kendall (1st)

Jim Oliver, the Hoop Shoot coordinator, praised the event, saying, “The event was great, the competition fierce, and the kids did well under pressure.”

Special recognition was given to Marile Steele, a 2025 National Hoop Shoot Finalist representing the Salisbury Elks Lodge in the Girls 10-11 division in Chicago in April 2025. A shadow box, filled with memories and achievements, was presented to her by Kenny Martin, the past exalted ruler and hoop shoot coordinator, showcasing pictures from Chicago and her autographed National Hoop Shoot T-shirt.

“We are so very proud of Marile,” Martin noted. “She represented the Salisbury Elks well. She even returned today with her father, Ryan, volunteering at this year’s Hoop Shoot. Shows great leadership.”

The shadow box will be displayed at the Salisbury Elks Lodge on South Main Street. Winners of the district competition will advance to state and then regional competitions, with the prestigious National Hoop Shoot Finals scheduled for April 16-19, 2025, in Chicago, Illinois.

This event not only highlights the skills of young athletes but also fosters community spirit and support, making it a must-watch as the competition heats up. Stay tuned for updates on their journey to the finals!
