URGENT UPDATE: Local basketball enthusiasts shine as the annual Hoop Shoot free throw contest unfolds at Hall Gym, Salisbury, on January 11, 2025. A total of 22 contestants aged 8 to 13 showcased their skills, vying for a spot in the district competition in High Point on January 24.
Debbie Martin, the publicity chair for the Salisbury Elks Lodge #699, expressed excitement over the event’s turnout. “We had a great turnout this year. The local talent did not disappoint the family and friends that were there for support and encouragement,” she stated.
Each contestant faced the pressure of shooting 25 free throws, with 10 in the first round and 15 in the finals. The competition was fierce, with young athletes showcasing remarkable poise and skill under pressure.

A shadow box, filled with memories and achievements, was presented to her by Kenny Martin, the past exalted ruler and hoop shoot coordinator, showcasing pictures from Chicago and her autographed National Hoop Shoot T-shirt.
“We are so very proud of Marile,” Martin noted. “She represented the Salisbury Elks well. She even returned today with her father, Ryan, volunteering at this year’s Hoop Shoot. Shows great leadership.”
The shadow box will be displayed at the Salisbury Elks Lodge on South Main Street. Winners of the district competition will advance to state and then regional competitions, with the prestigious National Hoop Shoot Finals scheduled for April 16-19, 2025, in Chicago, Illinois.
