UPDATE: LeBron James has been sidelined at the start of training camp, raising concerns for Los Angeles Lakers fans. Coach JJ Redick confirmed that James is dealing with “a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute,” just as the team gears up for the upcoming season.
This news comes just ahead of the Lakers’ opening night against the Golden State Warriors on October 24, where James is set to make history by becoming the first player to play 23 seasons in the NBA. Redick stated that the goal is for James to be ready by that date, but he emphasized a longer ramp-up period for the four-time champion as he navigates this injury.
Redick mentioned, “It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading into opening night for him,” acknowledging the challenges of Year 23. James, who averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds last season, has previously expressed the importance of cautious management as he aims for a lengthy playoff run.
Earlier today, James indicated he is still working to get back to full strength, stating, “I’m not where I want to be. But I mean, I don’t want to be where I want to be right now in September.” His camp has advised the Lakers to be “overly cautious” with his training to preserve his health throughout the season.
The Lakers’ preseason schedule kicks off against the Phoenix Suns on September 29 in Palm Desert, California. Sources confirm that James will not participate in this game. However, Redick expressed hope that James could suit up for at least one of the six preseason matches.
As James observed practice today in street clothes, teammate Austin Reaves noted his continued influence on the team. “You know, it’s Bron, he’s always going to observe and communicate what he sees,” said Reaves, highlighting James’ role as a vocal leader even from the sidelines.
In addition to James, the Lakers were also without Gabe Vincent (knee management), Marcus Smart (Achilles tendinopathy), and rookie Adou Thiero (knee swelling) during practice. Redick expects Vincent to return for the preseason opener against the Suns.
As the Lakers navigate these early challenges, all eyes are on James and how he will recover in time for the season. With the clock ticking down to opening night, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the King can rise to the occasion and lead his team once more.
