URGENT UPDATE: The La Plata County Public Health Department has just completed construction on a state-of-the-art water lab, enhancing the community’s access to safe drinking water. This vital facility, unveiled this summer, significantly boosts the capacity for testing public and private well water for harmful bacteria, including E. coli and Total Coliform.
With safe drinking water being essential for community health, this lab will allow La Plata County to provide testing services not only to its residents but also to neighboring areas in the Four Corners. Residents can now easily access water testing that is crucial for identifying potential contaminants that cause serious health issues such as diarrhea, nausea, and infections, particularly in vulnerable populations like children and the elderly.
The LPCPHD Water Quality Lab offers a Presence/Absence test for just $27.50, with results typically available within 24 hours. This affordable option is highly recommended for anyone concerned about their water quality. For those with well water showing foul odors or discoloration, immediate testing is advised. If bacteria are detected, swift action is necessary to disinfect the well following provided guidelines.
Samples must be submitted in sterile bottles, which can be obtained at the Public Health main office located at 281 Suttle St. from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, or through a self-service system in the lobby. To ensure accuracy, samples should be collected and submitted on the same day, as they must be processed within 30 hours of collection.
The new lab not only addresses issues related to private wells but also plays a critical role in monitoring public water systems. Under the EPA Safe Drinking Water Act, rigorous testing is mandated for public water systems, ensuring that they meet safety standards. If coliform bacteria are detected, a comprehensive investigation process is initiated to prevent any health risks.
Residents can easily access public water test results on the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment website, reinforcing transparency in water safety. Additionally, routine checks are conducted by the LPCPH Water Lab to monitor wastewater utilities and recreational waters, ensuring safety across the region.
For questions or more information about testing services, La Plata County residents can contact the Water Quality Lab at 828-8804 or via email at [email protected]. The lab is led by Kim Myers, the Water Quality Lab supervisor, who holds a Ph.D. in aqueous geochemistry and microbiology.
This development marks a significant step forward in safeguarding public health in La Plata County. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these services to ensure their drinking water is safe and free from harmful bacteria. Act now to protect your health and the health of your community!
