UPDATE: Chicago Cubs right fielder Kyle Tucker has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a persistent left calf issue. This urgent decision comes just one day after manager Craig Counsell expressed optimism about Tucker’s recovery, as his condition did not improve following Monday’s on-field workouts.
The Cubs announced the move before their game at Truist Park on September 5, 2023, making Tucker eligible to return on September 16. As part of the roster adjustment, the team recalled designated hitter/catcher Moisés Ballesteros to fill the gap.
Counsell explained, “It didn’t really get to a point of a lot of effort at all and wasn’t comfortable playing, and so we just said well, we’ve got to give this a little more time.” Tucker had aimed to participate in either Tuesday’s or Wednesday’s game but experienced increased discomfort in his calf, stating, “It got a little tighter as we went… today it kind of didn’t really do that as much,” highlighting the frustration of his setback.
Tucker’s injury timing is particularly challenging as he approaches free agency. He had recently been on fire at the plate, hitting an impressive .400 with a .489 on-base percentage in his last 11 games, including four home runs and 11 RBIs. This performance followed a brief hiatus that had improved his batting.
The injury first emerged on September 2 when Tucker departed a game due to calf tightness. He subsequently missed five games before the IL placement. The Cubs had initially opted against an immediate IL move, considering the expanded roster flexibility in September. Counsell noted the decision was complex, stating, “You’re just gathering information from all the sources and trying to make your best guess.”
While sidelined, Tucker can still hit and throw, as his calf issue primarily affects his running. It’s uncertain if he will require a short rehab assignment before returning to action. Reflecting on the situation, Tucker said, “It kind of sucks… you want to go out there and help the team win.”
With only 12 games remaining in the regular season, the Cubs will be monitoring Tucker’s progress closely. Fans and teammates alike are hopeful for a swift recovery as they aim for postseason contention.
