Korean-American Community Honors Veterans at NH Remembrance Ceremony

UPDATE: Over 200 attendees gathered on June 23, 2023, at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen for a poignant remembrance ceremony honoring veterans of the Korean War. This annual event, organized by the Korean-American community, serves as a vital tribute to those who fought for freedom on both sides.

Participants included families, dignitaries, and military representatives from the United States and South Korea, all united in a solemn acknowledgment of shared sacrifices. The ceremony highlighted the enduring bond formed during the conflict, often referred to as the “Forgotten War.”

The ceremony commenced with solemn tributes and the exchange of remembrance gifts between veterans from both nations. Citizens proudly displayed the U.S. flag alongside the South Korean flag, symbolizing their solidarity. Former New Hampshire Korean Veterans Association President Park Sun-woo emphasized the importance of this gathering, stating,

“Your attendance at these tremendous events every year … it forces all who care to never forget these vulnerable veterans.”

Korean War veterans quietly observed as speakers reflected on the harrowing past. The Korean War, which began on June 25, 1950, resulted in staggering casualties—over 500,000 South Korean troops suffered losses, with 137,000 killed, while 37,000 U.S. troops lost their lives and 92,000 were wounded. The ceremony provided a crucial platform for honoring their courage.

The emotional weight of the day was underscored by remarks from Jaehui Kim, the consul general of the Republic of Korea in Boston, who expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made:

“It is most humbling and a great privilege to stand before all of those who did so much to protect our peace.”

As the ceremonies unfolded, attendees joined in singing both national anthems and reciting pledges of allegiance, reaffirming their commitment to never forget the bravery displayed during the conflict.

U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan also addressed the crowd, reinforcing the message of unity:

“America answered the call to fight the forces of tyranny from the north, and together we demonstrated strength to the world.”

This year’s remembrance ceremony not only honored the memories of those who served but also strengthened the bonds between the two nations. As the event concluded, the Korean-American community reaffirmed its commitment to ensure that the sacrifices made during the Korean War are never forgotten.

For many attendees, this ceremony represents a vital connection to their heritage and a reminder of the ongoing importance of peace and freedom. As the world continues to evolve, the stories from the Korean War remain a poignant reminder of the price paid for liberty.
