King Harald V of Norway, aged 89, has been hospitalized in Tenerife while on his annual winter holiday. The King was admitted to Hospital Universitario Hospiten Sur after contracting an infection. This situation arose during a vacation he was sharing with his wife, Queen Sonja, on the Spanish island.
The Royal House of Norway issued a statement on March 4, 2024, confirming the King’s hospitalization. The statement read, “His Majesty the King (Harald V) was admitted this evening to Hospital Universitario Hospiten Sur in Tenerife.” It further detailed that the King is receiving treatment for an infection and dehydration, noting that “his condition is, under the circumstances, good.” A follow-up update is expected once medical professionals have fully assessed his health status.
King Harald has been Norway’s head of state since 1991, making him Europe’s oldest reigning monarch. Earlier this month, he attended the opening ceremony for the Total Defence Year 2026, where he was seen using walking aids, indicating his ongoing health challenges. Just days prior to his hospitalization, he celebrated his 89th birthday on March 2.
To mark the occasion, the Royal House diverged from tradition, opting not to release a solo portrait of the King. Instead, they shared a photograph featuring him alongside his immediate heirs, Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Ingrid Alexandra. This image, taken earlier in the winter, accompanied a heartfelt message on Instagram stating: “Happy birthday to His Majesty King Harald! Today the King turns 89 – we congratulate him and wish him a truly wonderful celebration.”
King Harald and Queen Sonja have been married for 58 years, a union that faced significant public scrutiny at its inception. Their romance began in 1959 when they were introduced by a mutual friend, Johan Stenerse. At that time, King Harald’s father, King Olav, opposed their relationship because of Sonja’s humble background; her father was a clothing merchant, which was deemed inappropriate for a Crown Prince’s partner.
Despite the royal disapproval, King Harald remained devoted to Sonja, who was an accomplished student at the University of Oslo. She had already studied at a prestigious finishing school in Switzerland and had a degree in dressmaking. The royal family’s attempts to separate them intensified when King Olav forbade his son from continuing the relationship. This led to a series of breakups and reconciliations, drawing public and media attention.
In a significant turn of events, the couple eventually married in 1968, despite the intense pressure from the royal household. Their enduring love story will soon be depicted in a new Amazon Prime series titled “Harald and Sonja,” which aims to bring their remarkable journey to a broader audience.
As the situation unfolds regarding King Harald’s health, many in Norway and beyond are expressing their hopes for his swift recovery. The Royal House has assured the public that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
