Kenwood Woman Charged After 5-Year-Old Brother’s Fatal Shooting

URGENT UPDATE: A 29-year-old woman from Kenwood has been charged with felony child endangerment after a tragic incident led to the death of her 5-year-old brother. The boy reportedly found a gun in his sister’s purse, resulting in a fatal shooting at their home located on the 4400 block of South Greenwood Avenue on Sunday.

In an alarming turn of events, authorities have confirmed that Danya Bell was arrested on the same day of the incident, just hours after the shooting occurred. Reports indicate that she was in the shower when she heard a loud noise from a bedroom. Upon investigating, she discovered her brother with a gunshot wound to the forehead and immediately called 911 for help.

The firearm, which police later identified as being in Bell’s possession, was found on the bed where the child was discovered. He was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The results of the autopsy are pending, and the child’s name has not been released to the public.

Detectives from the Calumet Area are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking case. Bell, identified as a concealed carry holder in the police report, is scheduled for a detention hearing on Wednesday.

This incident raises urgent questions about gun safety and child protection, making it a tragic reminder of the responsibilities that come with firearm ownership. The community is left grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event, urging for a thorough examination of the facts.

As this story develops, more information will be released, and the public is encouraged to stay tuned for updates on the legal proceedings against Bell and the ongoing investigation into this tragic incident.
