UPDATE: Kansas guard Darryn Peterson and BYU wing AJ Dybantsa are the top prospects for the 2026 NBA Draft, but both players insist their focus is solely on their college teams. Speaking at Big 12 Media Day in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 11, 2023, the young talents emphasized the importance of their current seasons over draft speculation.
Peterson, a highly-rated five-star recruit standing at 6-foot-6, is projected as the potential No. 1 overall pick, according to ESPN’s latest mock draft. However, he stated, “I handle it by not even paying any attention to it. I’m just going to go out and play and win games.” His commitment to the Jayhawks was solidified when he was named Big 12 preseason freshman of the year and made a unanimous selection to the all-Big 12 preseason first team.
Dybantsa, the 6-foot-9 standout and projected No. 2 pick, also sought to shift the narrative from individual achievements to team success. He was recently recognized on the Associated Press preseason All-America team. After a strong performance in an exhibition game against Nebraska, where he scored 30 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, Dybantsa reflected on the experience, stating, “I like the Big 12 level, but I learned a lot. I felt more comfortable getting into an exhibition and just getting to compete out there.”
Both players are keen to avoid the pressures of draft speculation. Dybantsa shared, “I think me and [Peterson] probably have similar mindsets. I don’t think he is too worried about going No. 1 overall. He’s just really trying to prove himself as a college player.”
Peterson echoed this sentiment, highlighting his role as a leader for the Jayhawks. “I lead by example and I’m trying to do all the right stuff, both on and off the court,” he said, emphasizing the importance of setting a positive example for teammates.
While Peterson and Dybantsa were the center of attention at the media event, another notable prospect, Cameron Boozer from UCF, was also discussed. Following UCF’s 96-71 exhibition loss to Duke, coach Johnny Dawkins praised Boozer’s potential, declaring, “He’s terrific. He’s a great basketball player and he still has room to grow.” Boozer, a two-time Gatorade National Player of the Year, is projected as the No. 3 pick in ESPN’s draft predictions.
As the college basketball season approaches, the focus remains on how Peterson and Dybantsa perform on the court. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if these rising stars can maintain their composure while leading their teams in the competitive Big 12 conference.
