UPDATE: A Jewish-owned HVAC company in San Jose has been vandalized with swastikas and other hate symbols, prompting an urgent investigation by the San Jose Police Department. The attack occurred late Monday night at HVAC Gurus, located on the 70 block of Phelan Avenue, and has been classified as a hate crime.
Owner Lior Zeevi expressed his deep disgust over the incident, describing it as “extremely disappointing.” Surveillance footage captured three masked figures committing the vandalism, which included drawing swastikas on four vehicles and painting “KKK” on the garage door. Zeevi reported that some vehicles also suffered broken windows and mirrors.
Authorities responded to the scene around 8:45 a.m. on October 10, 2023, after Zeevi was alerted by an employee about the extensive damage. “When I came in, I saw how bad it is,” he noted, emphasizing the emotional toll of the attack. In the wake of the vandalism, Zeevi has had to rent vehicles to continue the company’s operations.
“This is not normal,” Zeevi stated. “They targeted us just because we were being Jewish.” The incident has raised alarms in the Jewish community, especially following the attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, which have intensified fears of anti-Semitic acts.
Rabbi Mendel Weinfeld from Chabad, who serves as Zeevi’s rabbi, commented on the broader implications of such actions. “It was a message meant to intimidate, to isolate, instill fear,” he said, asserting that the Jewish community knows how to respond to such hatred. “Hate doesn’t get the final word — goodness does,” he added, encouraging resilience in the face of adversity.
The San Jose Police Department is actively seeking information to identify the suspects behind the vandalism. Community members and local officials have expressed solidarity with Zeevi and the Jewish community, emphasizing the need for vigilance and support against hate crimes.
This attack comes amidst a troubling trend of rising anti-Semitism in various parts of the country. As authorities continue their investigation, the Jewish community is urged to remain cautious and proactive in safeguarding their establishments.
WHAT’S NEXT: The San Jose Police Department is expected to release updates as the investigation progresses, and community leaders are mobilizing to enhance security measures. Local residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity as the search for the suspects intensifies.
