Instagram’s Mosseri Declares Polished Aesthetic “Dead” Today

UPDATE: Instagram head Adam Mosseri has declared that the platform’s polished aesthetic is officially “dead,” as the rise of AI-generated content reshapes social media. In a statement released on December 27, 2023, Mosseri emphasized that creators must shift to a “more raw aesthetic” to remain relevant in this evolving landscape.

Mosseri’s urgent message highlights a significant transformation in how users share content, moving away from the highly curated feeds that once defined Instagram. He noted that “people largely stopped sharing personal moments” through polished images, opting instead for unrefined “shoe shots and unflattering candids” sent via direct messages. This shift reflects a broader trend in social media where authenticity is increasingly valued over perfection.

The Instagram executive pointed to the overwhelming presence of AI images as a driving force behind this change. With tools like Midjourney and Sora making it easier than ever to produce lifelike content, Mosseri warns that traditional photography’s allure is fading. “Flattering imagery is cheap to produce and boring to consume,” he stated, urging creators to embrace a more genuine approach to content.

Meta, Instagram’s parent company, is rapidly integrating AI capabilities into its platforms. Last year, Instagram introduced an AI studio allowing users to create custom chatbots, including digital versions of themselves. As AI technology advances, Mosseri cautioned that distinguishing between real and synthetic media will become increasingly challenging for social platforms.

Mosseri proposed that camera companies implement cryptographic signatures on photos to confirm their authenticity. He stressed the need for greater transparency regarding AI-generated content on Instagram, asserting that users should be clearly informed about who is posting and what is real.

“As AI-generated media becomes more prevalent, we must adapt to ensure that human creativity remains competitive,” he concluded, urging for better creative controls on the platform.

This declaration from Mosseri signals a crucial turning point for Instagram as it navigates the complexities of an AI-infused landscape. The platform’s evolution will be closely watched as both creators and users adjust to this new reality.

Stay tuned for further updates on how Instagram plans to evolve in response to the AI revolution.
