UPDATE: A Pennsylvania woman sustained severe injuries when a massive slab of ice flew off a tractor-trailer and crashed through her windshield while driving on Saturday morning. Madeline Grace, 7, was left with a broken eye socket and a fractured nose after the incident, reported by CBS News Pittsburgh.
The terrifying accident occurred around 10:30 AM on a local highway, leaving Grace in shock and her 7-year-old daughter in the backseat unharmed. “I’m just grateful that I blocked that from going in the backseat and hitting my daughter,” she shared, emphasizing the emotional weight of the moment. Although her daughter was visibly upset, Grace reassured her, saying, “Yeah, it was pretty rough for me too, baby.”
Grace was treated at a local hospital for her injuries and described the incident as harrowing. “Every time I close my eyes, I see that chunk of ice coming at me,” she said. “I just remember thinking there wasn’t time to do anything.”
The incident raises significant concerns about road safety, especially given that it took place even after the enactment of Christine’s Law in Pennsylvania. This law mandates drivers to clear snow and ice from their vehicles or face fines. Drivers can incur fines of up to $1,500 if their negligence leads to injuries or damages. Named after Christine Lambert, who tragically died from a similar incident, the law aims to prevent such accidents.
In response to this ongoing problem, Maryland is contemplating similar legislation. Democratic Maryland State Del. Edith Patterson introduced House Bill 474, which would require drivers to clear snow and ice from various parts of their vehicles, including the hood, trunk, and roof. Currently, Maryland does not have laws specifically addressing this issue, but other states like Alaska and Wisconsin have already implemented regulations to enhance road safety.
Grace stressed the importance of compliance with such laws, stating, “Laws mean nothing if people ignore them.” She expressed her sympathy for innocent drivers who suffer due to others’ negligence, saying, “I have more sympathy for the people that are driving, minding their own business, had zero choice in the matter, and are now injured, possibly permanently.”
Authorities are actively searching for the truck responsible for this life-altering incident. State police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
As winter weather continues to blanket many regions, the urgency of addressing road safety amidst icy conditions cannot be overstated. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by neglecting to clear vehicles of ice and snow.
