URGENT UPDATE: Hulu is set to release a groundbreaking special, “HIV Unwrapped,” on November 30, aiming to reshape the narrative around HIV stigma through the lens of fashion. This innovative collaboration brings together design students from the Parsons School of Design and top HIV scientists to create a unique dialogue that combines complex science with artistic expression.
Executive producer Karl Schmid described the project as a fusion of two seemingly opposite worlds—science and fashion—stating, “We are taking science, really complex science, and fashion, two worlds that you don’t normally think come together, and weirdly, they do.” Schmid, who has successfully launched the initiative in Australia, England, and Rwanda, is now excited to bring the conversation to New York City.
The special will provide an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the fashion show, showcasing the creative process and the partnerships that emerged between designers and science experts. “Fashion is a portal to creating ideas and telling a unique story,” said Shreya Jani, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at Gilead Sciences. She emphasized the importance of using fashion to advocate for the end of HIV.
The event highlights personal stories of those living with HIV, challenging stereotypes and encouraging a broader understanding of individual experiences. Participant Bianca Ordoñez expressed, “We are more than the worst thing that has happened to us and that we can do incredible and be beautiful regardless of our HIV status.”
Viewers can expect to see how the garments are made and the significance of this creative collaboration in advancing awareness about HIV. The special will air on the ABC Owned Television Stations’ Localish Network on December 1, coinciding with World AIDS Day, further amplifying its impact.
This timely release aims not only to celebrate creativity but also to foster a crucial dialogue about HIV, showcasing that through collaboration, we can challenge stigma and create something beautiful. The urgency of this message resonates in today’s society, making “HIV Unwrapped” a must-watch event for those seeking to understand and combat the stigma surrounding HIV.
Prepare to tune in to Hulu on November 30 and catch the special on December 1 to witness this powerful intersection of science and fashion.
