Hornets Shock Thunder with Stunning 27-Point Victory

UPDATE: The Charlotte Hornets delivered a shocking blow to the NBA-leading Oklahoma City Thunder, winning 124-97 on July 15, 2025. This defeat marks the Thunder’s worst loss of the season, ending their incredible streak against teams with losing records.

Brandon Miller led the Hornets with 28 points, while Kon Knueppel contributed 23 points. The Hornets, who had lost three of their last four games, stunned the Thunder, who had previously dominated with a 30-7 record this season.

This loss is particularly significant as it is the first time the Thunder have failed to score 100 points in a game this season. In a startling trend, this defeat also represents Oklahoma City’s first loss to a team with a losing record since November 19, 2024.

Oklahoma City was favored by 15.5 points going into the game, yet they became the first team in the last 35 seasons to lose by more than 20 points as a favorite of that margin. The previous record for the largest loss by a favorite of 15 points or more was by 17 points.

The Thunder trailed early, as the Hornets raced to a 21-9 lead. Although Oklahoma City managed to tie the game at 33 by the end of the first quarter, the Hornets regained control in the second, pushing their lead to 67-50 at halftime.

Star player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander struggled, scoring just 21 points on 7 of 21 shooting, marking a season-low field goal percentage of 33%. This is his second consecutive game below 40% shooting, a first for him since the 2021-22 season.

The Hornets maintained their momentum in the second half, with LaMelo Ball delivering a remarkable circus shot that added to their lead. Miller capped off the third quarter with a buzzer-beater three-pointer, extending the Hornets’ advantage to 99-71.

With this victory, the Hornets not only secured a much-needed win but also delivered a significant blow to the Thunder’s season aspirations. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the Thunder seek to rebound from this unexpected defeat.

What’s Next: Oklahoma City will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next matchup, hoping to restore their dominance and avoid further damage to their championship hopes. The Hornets, meanwhile, will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming games. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
