UPDATE: A 66-year-old hiker has been found alive after going missing for nearly three weeks in Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand, an outcome authorities describe as miraculous. Graham Garnett, who vanished on December 30, 2025, defied all odds and was discovered alive in a remote shelter on January 19, 2026.
The search for Garnett began after he failed to return from his solo hiking trip, prompting a massive rescue operation involving helicopters, specialized teams, and dozens of ground searchers. Despite the efforts, heavy cloud cover and treacherous weather hindered the search, leading authorities to suspend operations after several weeks with no sign of him.
Unbeknownst to rescuers, Garnett had been navigating the rugged terrain, following streams and ridgelines, despite suffering injuries. His perseverance led him to Venus Hut, a remote refuge within the park, where he arrived just days before being found.
On Friday afternoon, around 2:30 p.m., contractors working in the area stumbled upon Garnett alive inside the hut. He was immediately airlifted to a local hospital, where he has since been reunited with his family. They expressed immense gratitude for the support received during this harrowing ordeal.
Police hailed Garnett’s survival as an incredible testament to his resilience. “This is an amazing result. We are so pleased for Graham and his loved ones,” stated Sergeant Jonny Evans. “He’s extremely lucky to be alive.”
The entire community has rallied around Garnett’s family, celebrating his miraculous return against all expectations. This remarkable rescue highlights the unpredictability of nature and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Authorities urge hikers to prepare adequately for outdoor adventures to ensure safety.
