BREAKING: A Hartford man has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for selling oxycodone that was illegally prescribed to another individual. Angel Benitez, aged 38, received his sentence on Wednesday in federal court in Hartford, as confirmed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.
The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Vernon D. Oliver, who also mandated that Benitez serve an additional three years of supervised release following his prison term. This ruling comes as part of a broader crackdown on illegal drug distribution by federal authorities.
Benitez was implicated in a significant investigation led by the DEA New Haven Tactical Diversion Squad. According to federal officials, he conspired with an unnamed accomplice to sell oxycodone pills that were prescribed to the co-conspirator. During August and September 2024, undercover investigators conducted controlled purchases, leading to Benitez’s arrest on November 6, 2024.
A search of Benitez’s residence revealed a Smith and Wesson .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol, which had been reported stolen in West Hartford. Authorities pointed out that his prior criminal history, which includes state-level convictions for assault, burglary, and larceny, disqualified him from legally possessing a firearm.
Benitez, who has been held in custody since his arrest, took a plea deal on March 26, 2024, pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy to distribute oxycodone and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The urgency of this case highlights the ongoing battle against opioid abuse and illegal drug trafficking in Connecticut and across the nation.
As federal officials continue to address this critical issue, the fallout from Benitez’s actions serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with illegal drug distribution. The community is urged to remain vigilant as investigations into similar cases persist.
