Greenville High School Hosts Festive Holiday Dinner for All

UPDATE: Greenville High School students celebrated the holiday season with a festive dinner on December 9, 2023, serving over 1,100 students a traditional meal featuring mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, and roasted ham. The event, organized by the school’s food and nutrition department, aimed to ensure every student enjoyed a holiday meal, regardless of their circumstances.

Officials confirmed that this annual event is crucial for many students who may not experience a festive dinner at home, including those from low-income families and international exchange students. Food and Nutrition Director Dan Kuk emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating, “Not all of them get to participate in this type of meal.”

The holiday dinner provided at no cost to students reflects the school district’s commitment to supporting its community. Kuk noted, “It’s a little bit of an added expense, but the school district helps out with that.” The meal was funded through district resources, ensuring that all students could partake without financial burden.

The event was not only about the meal but also about creating a joyful atmosphere. Emily Fox, a senior and DECA vice president, highlighted the role of student volunteers in making the event special. “We had a lot of volunteers putting everything up,” she said, adding that DECA students served homemade desserts, including apple crumble and cherry turnovers. This initiative aims to provide opportunities for students who may otherwise miss out on such experiences.

As students enjoyed their meals, they were surprised by a special visit from Claude Johnson, a GHS employee and Greenville City Councilman, who donned a Santa costume along with The Grinch. Sophomores Gabby Pelak and Kendal Taylor expressed their excitement, with Taylor commenting, “It’s really nice and it makes me feel festive.”

Kuk praised his staff for their dedication, stating, “I am blessed to have them. They really go above and beyond.” Serving meals to a large student body can be challenging, but the students demonstrated patience and appreciation for the special occasion.

This heartwarming event not only filled the bellies of students but also spread holiday cheer throughout Greenville High School, reinforcing the spirit of giving and community. As the holiday season approaches, the school continues to highlight the importance of togetherness and support within their student body.

Stay tuned for more updates as Greenville High School continues to foster community spirit through initiatives like this.
