URGENT UPDATE: The Heavenly Hounds Program at St. Agnes Medical Center is transforming lives in Fresno, California with therapy dogs like Franco the Great Dane, who dons a superhero cape to bring smiles to patients and staff alike. This initiative, which began in 2007, is gaining momentum as the need for emotional support in healthcare settings intensifies.
Franco, a friendly Great Dane, is not just a pet; he’s a beacon of hope, making his rounds in the hospital with enthusiasm. His handler, Gina Paul, a dedicated volunteer for nearly a decade, describes him as “Batman at work, but Darth Vader at home.” With his playful spirit and love for interaction, Franco helps alleviate stress for patients facing surgery or difficult procedures. “It takes their mind off ‘I’m about to have surgery or a procedure,’” Paul says.
The impact of therapy dogs on patient morale is significant. Brandon Miller, the Volunteer Services Manager at St. Agnes, emphasizes that interactions with Heavenly Hounds can turn a rough day into a positive experience. “Sometimes just one of the Heavenly Hounds coming by can change their day,” he states.
The program features 12 therapy dogs, including Franco, who regularly visit various departments, especially the Emergency Room, which often requests canine comfort during stressful times. As the demand for therapy dogs grows, the program is on a mission to expand its ranks. “Before the pandemic, we had more dogs in the Heavenly Hounds program, and now we’re working to welcome more furry friends,” Paul explains.
The need for emotional support in hospital settings cannot be overstated. Therapy dogs have been shown to enhance mental well-being, making a crucial difference for patients and staff. The program invites local dog owners to consider training and socializing their pets for public work. “If you think your dog can work in public, please get them out and get them tested,” Paul urges.
This heartfelt initiative not only brightens the day for patients but also fosters a sense of community within the hospital. With the ongoing efforts to expand the Heavenly Hounds Program, St. Agnes Medical Center is committed to continuing its mission of providing comfort and care through the power of therapy dogs.
