UPDATE: Frontier Airlines will cease all operations from Palm Springs International Airport in just a few hours. Effective November 29, the budget airline will no longer operate flights from this busy airport, impacting thousands of travelers heading to and from the Coachella Valley.
The decision, announced last week, is attributed to shifts in travel demand and ongoing adjustments within the aviation industry. Frontier currently operates routes to Denver and San Francisco from Palm Springs, but a spokesperson reassured travelers that other airlines will maintain these essential connections.
“Palm Springs International Airport is not losing any nonstop destinations following Frontier’s decision to cease operations at PSP effective Nov. 29,” the spokesperson stated.
Travelers will still have access to flights to Denver and San Francisco, with United Airlines and Southwest Airlines covering the route to Denver, and United Airlines and Alaska Airlines serving San Francisco.
Despite this withdrawal, Palm Springs International Airport continues to thrive, reporting a nearly 5 percent increase in passenger growth year-to-date compared to last year. Officials remain optimistic about future air service developments.
In a notable shift, Frontier Airlines is expanding its reach elsewhere. Just last week, the airline launched a non-stop service from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
Beginning in January 2024, Frontier will introduce several new routes across the U.S., including flights from New Jersey, Florida, Illinois, Utah, and Arizona. This expansion features a three-weekly non-stop service between Newark Liberty International Airport and Orlando International Airport, kicking off on January 21.
The following day, a twice-weekly non-stop service will commence between Salt Lake City International Airport and Tucson International Airport. Additionally, new routes connecting Miami International Airport to Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Orlando International Airport to Pensacola International Airport are set to launch in February 2024.
To celebrate these new routes, Frontier Airlines is offering introductory fares starting at just $29. According to Josh Flyr, vice president of network and operations design at Frontier Airlines, “These new routes will offer consumers more affordable connections across the United States beginning in early 2024.”
As Frontier Airlines shifts its focus, travelers are advised to explore alternative options while Palm Springs International Airport continues to grow as a key transit hub in the region. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
