UPDATE: In a thrilling matchup Saturday night, the No. 22 Michigan State Spartans edged out the No. 14 Arkansas Razorbacks with a final score of 69-66 at Breslin Center in East Lansing. Freshman standout Cam Ward delivered an impressive performance, recording a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in just his second collegiate game.
This victory is crucial for the Spartans (2-0) as they continue to build momentum early in the season. Ward’s performance, alongside Coen Carr‘s solid contribution of 15 points, energized the home crowd and showcased the depth of Michigan State’s freshman class.
As the game unfolded, Carr ignited the offense with a spectacular fast-break dunk, sending the Breslin Center into a frenzy. Despite a fierce challenge from Arkansas (1-1), which included contributions from Detroit native Darius Acuff Jr. and veteran forward Nick Pringle, Michigan State surged ahead with an 8-0 run led by Carr’s creative playmaking.
The Spartans struggled from beyond the arc, hitting only 1-of-14 three-point attempts, but capitalized on free throw opportunities, converting 18-of-24 attempts. Coach Tom Izzo emphasized the importance of attacking the paint, resulting in a significant +18 advantage in that category over their opponents.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to establish a significant lead until Acuff hit a three-pointer, giving Arkansas a five-point lead at halftime. However, a buzzer-beater by forward Jaxon Kohler kept Michigan State close, trailing 39-36 at the break.
In the second half, the Spartans regained their footing, with pivotal plays from guard Jeremy Fears Jr., who delivered a crucial alley-oop assist to Carson Cooper. Despite foul troubles for Carr, Michigan State found its rhythm, finally hitting their first three-pointer of the game thanks to Trey Fort, igniting the crowd once again.
As tensions rose, Jordan Scott stepped up, contributing crucial baskets and maintaining MSU’s lead. Ward showcased his scoring ability with a powerful dunk, while Cooper’s nine points in the second half kept the Spartans ahead.
In a dramatic finish, Arkansas tied the game at 66 with an 8-0 run in the final two minutes. However, Cooper’s go-ahead free throw and a key defensive play against Acuff allowed Fears to seal the victory from the charity stripe, ensuring Michigan State’s triumphant win.
This win not only boosts Michigan State’s record but also sets the stage for a promising season ahead. Fans can look forward to the Spartans’ next matchup as they continue to harness the energy and talent of their freshman class in pursuit of greater success.
