URGENT UPDATE: Massachusetts braces for a wave of freezing temperatures as freeze and frost warnings take effect overnight on October 26, 2023. The National Weather Service has confirmed that the coldest air of the season will sweep in, impacting much of the state with subfreezing conditions.
Residents across Berkshire, Bristol, Hampden, Plymouth, and Norfolk Counties are urged to prepare for temperatures plunging as low as 25 degrees. The warnings go into effect at 11 p.m. and will last until 9 a.m. on Friday, with the coldest temperatures predicted just before 7 a.m. at sunrise.
Frost is expected to blanket many inland communities, while coastal areas, including Cape Cod and Nantucket, are the only regions likely to escape the frost advisory. Residents in affected areas are advised to take precautions for crops and sensitive plants to prevent damage from the severe cold.
As temperatures dip, daily highs on Friday are forecasted to reach the low 60s with sunny skies. However, overnight lows will continue to drop into the low 40s and upper 30s. A warmer Saturday is on the horizon, with expected highs in the mid-60s, but conditions will shift again as a chance of showers emerges after midnight on Sunday.
Beginning Sunday morning, a coastal flood watch will be in effect, lasting through late Monday night. Rain is anticipated to impact Massachusetts throughout the weekend, with daily highs in the low 60s and upper 50s, alongside overnight lows in the upper 50s and low 40s.
“Residents should remain vigilant and prepared for these chilling conditions,” the National Weather Service cautioned.
