URGENT UPDATE: Free glaucoma eye screenings are set to take place on January 29, from noon to 2 p.m. at Selma’s Primary Eye Care. This initiative, led by the Visually Impaired People Organization, Inc. (V.I.P), aims to raise awareness during Glaucoma Awareness Month and is crucial for early detection of this sight-threatening condition.
Dr. Kristina Lovinggood will conduct the screenings at 2401 Medical Center Parkway. V.I.P.’s CEO and President, William Bowman, emphasizes the significance of these screenings, stating, “Early detection is important. Once you have a serious visual impairment, your life drastically changes.” This proactive approach has shown success in the past; last year, elevated eye pressure was detected in three participants, all of whom were directed to seek treatment.
The screening includes an eye pressure test known as tonometry, which measures fluid pressure inside the eye. Elevated pressures could indicate glaucoma, but the benefits extend beyond eye health. Bowman notes that these screenings can also uncover other serious health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and various cancers.
Residents of Selma and surrounding areas are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. For those requiring transportation assistance, Bowman is available at 334-354-4015 to help arrange rides to the clinic.
