URGENT UPDATE: Four people have tragically been confirmed dead following a suspected migrant boat crash off the coast of San Diego late Friday night. The incident occurred around 11:40 p.m. near Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach, according to reports from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Coast Guard officials responded swiftly, rescuing five individuals from the wreckage. Four of those rescued were hospitalized, while one was handed over to the Department of Homeland Security. The situation escalated when authorities discovered six individuals on the beach, including one person trapped under the overturned boat. Tragically, another victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Coast Guard’s search efforts intensified after a bystander reported a person in distress in the water near Imperial Beach Pier, just three miles from the Mexican border. Responders located three additional bodies in the water, bringing the total fatalities to four.
“This case demonstrates the severe risks posed to individuals attempting to enter the United States by sea in unstable vessels,” said Coast Guard Capt. Robert Tucker. Survivors have indicated that they are Mexican citizens, while the identities of others remain unknown.
As search operations continue, the Coast Guard is on high alert, particularly with the arrival of a strong storm that has hit Southern California, leading to heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions. Flash flood and mudslide warnings have been issued throughout the region.
Authorities emphasize the dangers associated with maritime migration, especially under adverse weather conditions. The Coast Guard remains vigilant, conducting ongoing searches for any additional individuals who may have been on board the ill-fated vessel.
