UPDATE: Former Lewiston Police Chief David St. Pierre has been nominated to become Maine’s next U.S. Marshal, according to a press release from U.S. Senator Susan Collins. This announcement comes just days after St. Pierre’s retirement, as he is recognized for his “steady leadership” during the tragic mass shooting in October 2023.
St. Pierre, who led the Lewiston Police Department for more than three decades, now awaits Senate confirmation to assume this critical federal role. “Chief St. Pierre has dedicated more than 30 years to protecting the people of Lewiston,” Collins stated, highlighting his extensive experience and dedication to public safety.
Should he be confirmed, St. Pierre will take over from Kevin Neal, who has served as U.S. Marshal since 2022 and is transitioning to a similar position in Massachusetts. In his new capacity, St. Pierre will oversee the Maine division of the U.S. Marshals Service, which includes apprehending fugitives, managing federal prisoners, and running the Witness Protection Program.
St. Pierre’s leadership was notably crucial during the response to the deadliest shooting in Maine’s history, where he coordinated hundreds of officers from local, state, and federal agencies. His ability to maintain composure during such a crisis has been commended by officials and residents alike. “Chief St. Pierre played a central role during the most challenging moment in Maine’s recent history,” Collins added.
In addition to his crisis management skills, St. Pierre has been instrumental in planning the transition to Lewiston’s new public safety facility, which consolidates various law enforcement agencies under one roof. His qualifications also include graduating from the FBI National Academy in 2018 and active membership in multiple law enforcement associations.
Mayor Carl Sheline expressed pride in St. Pierre’s nomination, stating, “We definitely miss him, but I couldn’t be happier for him.” The community’s support reflects the strong bond built during his tenure as chief.
As the Senate prepares for confirmation proceedings, all eyes will be on St. Pierre, whose extensive background in law enforcement and proven dedication to the safety of Maine residents position him as a strong candidate for this pivotal role.
