Ford CEO Confirms Major Mustang Investment Amid Sales Drop

UPDATE: Ford Motor Company is doubling down on its iconic Mustang despite a significant sales decline in the United States. In the first half of 2024, the company sold only 23,551 Mustangs, marking a 14.2 percent drop compared to the same period last year.

CEO Jim Farley revealed in a recent podcast with The Verge that global interest in the Mustang is surging, with more units being purchased outside the United States than within. This international demand gives Ford the confidence to not only continue production but also to secure the Mustang’s long-term future with substantial investments.

Farley enthusiastically stated, “everyone wants to do a burnout,” emphasizing that the Mustang is the perfect choice for those seeking a taste of American muscle, no matter where they are in the world. He acknowledged that the Mustang’s locked ECU has not deterred sales, although he shared a personal note about his son opting for an older model due to tunability concerns.

In a surprising twist, the ECU has recently been cracked by HP Tuners, potentially paving the way for an aftermarket boom that could enhance the Mustang’s performance.

But there’s more on the horizon. Farley hinted at exciting new developments, including the possible introduction of a Mach 4 sedan and a Baja-inspired off-roader. These concepts were reportedly shown to dealers last year, suggesting Ford is serious about expanding the Mustang lineup.

Additionally, discussions about a hybrid powertrain for the Mustang are underway, as strict emissions regulations in Europe and elsewhere make it increasingly challenging to market traditional internal combustion engine models. However, the classic gas-powered Mustang is here to stay, with reports indicating it will remain in production well into the 2030s. Farley previously stated that there will never be a Mustang EV, aside from the already established Mach-E.

The buzz around these potential new models underscores the Mustang’s enduring appeal and Ford’s commitment to leveraging its legacy brand to tap into evolving automotive markets. As rumors of expansion swirl, enthusiasts and consumers alike are encouraged to stay tuned for what Ford has in store for the Mustang’s future.

This investment not only solidifies the Mustang’s place in Ford’s lineup but also highlights the company’s agility in responding to market demands. With new models potentially on the way, the Mustang could evolve in ways that satisfy both purists and a new generation of performance car enthusiasts.

As Ford continues to innovate and adapt, the Mustang remains a beacon of American automotive culture, poised to adapt and thrive in a changing landscape. Stay informed for more updates on this developing story.
