UPDATE: A Fort Myers couple has been charged following a shocking spree of armed robberies along I-75 last week, according to U.S. Attorney Greg Kehoe. Starting on September 16, 2023, the duo allegedly robbed five stores in just three days, creating a wave of fear in local communities.
The pair, identified as Taleah Williams, 21, and Javion Ward, 21, executed their first robbery at a convenience store in Tampa, where Ward brandished a pistol and made off with approximately $600. This was merely the beginning of a crime spree that would escalate quickly.
Just hours after this robbery, Williams attempted to rob a gas station in Lake Panasoffkee but fled empty-handed. However, the couple struck again two days later, targeting multiple stores across four Gulf Coast cities, including Gibsonton, Ellenton, Nokomis, and North Port. In Gibsonton, Ward was seen jumping over the counter, attempting to access a safe, while in Ellenton, he allegedly threatened to pistol-whip an employee.
The situation intensified when, shortly after their final robbery, Williams posted a video on social media showing herself and Ward flaunting wads of cash. This reckless move led to a police investigation that culminated in a search warrant executed at Williams’ residence the following day, where authorities discovered clothing matching that worn during the robberies.
Both Williams and Ward are now facing serious federal charges under the Hobbs Act robbery, which could result in a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison. Kehoe emphasized the gravity of their actions, stating that such behavior will not be tolerated and that law enforcement will vigorously pursue justice for affected communities.
As this story develops, residents of the affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Stay tuned for more updates as authorities continue their investigation into this alarming series of crimes.
