UPDATE: A federal judge has just issued a crucial ruling, blocking the Trump administration from deploying National Guard troops from any state to Oregon. This decision follows President Trump’s controversial attempt to circumvent an earlier order halting the deployment of the Oregon National Guard.
On Sunday, October 15, U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut expanded her previous order after the administration sought to send members of the California and Texas National Guard to Portland. California has joined Oregon in a legal challenge against the president’s deployment of 200 federalized California National Guard personnel to Portland.
The Pentagon had also planned to send Texas National Guard troops to Portland and Chicago, with Texas Governor Greg Abbott approving the move. However, Judge Immergut questioned the legality of this action, stating it appeared to violate her earlier ruling.
The temporary restraining order will remain in effect until October 19, with a scheduled telephone hearing on October 17 to discuss extending the order another 14 days. As of now, neither Trump nor senior administration officials have commented on the judge’s ruling.
“We just won in court — again. A federal judge BLOCKED Donald Trump’s unlawful attempt to DEPLOY 300 OF OUR NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS TO PORTLAND,”
California Governor Gavin Newsom stated on social media, emphasizing the significance of the judicial decision. Oregon State Attorney General Dan Rayfield echoed this sentiment, remarking that the ruling prohibits the president from using National Guard forces from any state to evade the law.
Rayfield further highlighted the gravity of this situation, stating, “The president can’t keep playing whack-a-mole with different states’ Guard units to get around court orders & the rule of law.” His remarks come as tensions rise over the deployment of federal troops amid ongoing protests and unrest in Portland.
This ruling underscores the ongoing legal battles surrounding the use of National Guard troops in response to civil unrest, reflecting deep divisions in federal and state governance. As developments unfold, many are closely watching how the administration will respond to this significant legal setback.
Stay tuned for further updates as this critical situation continues to evolve.
