UPDATE: The family of Daniel Waterman, a father-to-be who tragically died after his girlfriend allegedly crashed their car on purpose, is speaking out following the recent upgrade of charges against her. Leigha Mumby, 24, now faces charges of vehicular homicide after Waterman succumbed to injuries from the February incident.
Waterman, 22, was critically injured during the February crash in Flagler County, Florida, and passed away on October 8, 2025. His family expressed satisfaction with the legal developments as they mourn the loss of a young man who was eagerly anticipating the arrival of his daughter.
According to reports from FOX35 Orlando, Waterman had been in a coma but managed to communicate details of the crash to authorities from his hospital bed. He alleged that Mumby intentionally caused the accident, stating, “I don’t care what happens. You’ll get what you deserve.”
“There are no real winners in this situation. It’s a terrible, horrible situation, and the fact that these charges were filed, I think were right and just,”
said John Hager, attorney for Waterman’s family. “The family is satisfied with how the State Attorney’s office in Flagler County has been working diligently.”
Following Waterman’s death, the charges against Mumby were elevated from reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and aggravated battery to vehicular homicide. She was initially arrested in July, pleaded not guilty, and was released from jail after posting a $150,000 bond.
Waterman’s mother revealed to Syracuse.com that her son suffered extensive injuries, including broken bones and dislocations. His grandfather described the severity, stating, “He broke everything. He was scratched up all over the place.”
Waterman’s obituary poignantly noted his excitement for fatherhood, highlighting that he “left this world on October 8th, far too soon following a tragic act of violence.” The family reflected on his passion for basketball and his infectious energy that touched many lives.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the Flagler County Attorney’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol have not yet commented on the latest developments. The case continues to draw attention as the community processes this devastating loss.
This shocking incident raises critical questions about accountability and safety on the roads. As the investigation progresses, many are watching closely for updates. Stay tuned for more breaking news on this tragic story.
