UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, the Elyria Pioneers decisively defeated the Avon Eagles 78-64 on January 16, bringing an end to Avon’s impressive seven-game winning streak. This pivotal matchup in the Southwestern Conference (SWC) shook up the standings, with Elyria bouncing back after a tough loss to Berea-Midpark just three days prior.
Elyria launched into the game with a blistering start, taking an early 19-4 lead that set the tone for the night. “We still had a nasty taste in our mouth from the last loss,” said Elyria guard Tink Shelton. “We wanted to show them that we are still No. 1 in this conference.” The Pioneers’ defensive strategy proved effective, as they held Avon scoreless for the first four minutes of play.
The intensity continued as Elyria pushed their lead to 44-21 by halftime, showcasing a focused and determined performance. Coach Brett Larrick praised his team’s effort, stating, “That first half might have been the most focused and locked in as we were in all areas.” Despite Avon’s 6-3 All-Ohioan player Joey Ziegler scoring 14 points, Shelton’s defensive presence made it challenging for the Eagles to find their rhythm.
The pivotal moment came when Elyria’s Jermiah Daniels suffered an ankle injury in the first half, forcing him out of the game. “He told us to keep playing,” Shelton noted, emphasizing the team’s resilience. Even with this setback, Elyria maintained a commanding lead, showcasing contributions from players like Rondel Grimmett (15 points), Cam Bell (13 points), and Kendyll Compton (17 points, 8 rebounds).
Avon struggled to recover, with Coach Mike Fitch admitting, “We were not ready to go. Elyria brought intention and physicality, and we backed down.” Despite a late surge from Avon, Elyria’s depth and determination ensured their victory, improving their record to 10-3 (5-2 SWC) while sending Avon to 9-2 (4-3 SWC).
As the SWC season progresses, Elyria and Avon will look to regain their footing. Elyria will face Olmsted Falls next on December 20, while Avon will host North Ridgeville on January 20. “It is one loss. We are still 9-2, and we have to learn from it,” Fitch commented, emphasizing the need to move forward.
The impactful win for Elyria not only boosts their confidence but also reignites their pursuit for the conference title. Fans can expect an exciting rematch as both teams continue their campaigns in the competitive SWC landscape.
