Elon Musk’s Feud with Ryanair CEO Boosts Airline’s Sales

A public feud between Elon Musk and Michael O’Leary, CEO of Ryanair, has unexpectedly propelled the airline’s sales. O’Leary expressed gratitude for the “additional business” generated by the ongoing dispute during a press conference in Dublin on March 13, 2024. The confrontation began when Ryanair announced it would not install Musk’s Starlink satellite internet technology on its aircraft, citing concerns that the antennas would increase drag and fuel costs.

Musk reacted strongly to Ryanair’s decision, calling O’Leary “misinformed” and questioning whether the airline could accurately measure fuel usage. O’Leary took to the airwaves with Newstalk, where he did not shy away from criticizing Musk, referring to him as “an idiot” despite the billionaire’s wealth. This back-and-forth has turned into a public spectacle, with both figures exchanging increasingly incendiary remarks.

In a subsequent response, Musk escalated his comments, labeling O’Leary a “retarded twat” and suggesting that he might consider purchasing Ryanair. He even launched a poll on social media, asking followers whether he should “restore Ryan as their rightful ruler,” a reference that appeared to confuse the late billionaire Tony Ryan, the airline’s founder who passed away in 2007.

O’Leary, undeterred, poked fun at Musk by launching a “Great Idiots seat sale,” aimed at attracting customers who might be interested in the ongoing debate. He remarked that, “As anybody with teenage children would know, you’re frequently called an idiot and a twat at home,” highlighting the resilience of his brand in the face of Musk’s provocations.

Despite the personal attacks, O’Leary acknowledged the financial uptick Ryanair has experienced as a result of the feud. The airline chief remarked that Musk’s antics have inadvertently worked in Ryanair’s favor, driving customer interest and bookings. He added, “We would think it’s a very good investment, certainly a significantly better investment than the financial returns he is earning on X,” referring to Musk’s social media platform.

Both Musk and O’Leary have a history of courting controversy, but in this instance, it appears that Ryanair is gaining the upper hand. The airline’s “Big Idiot Seat Sale” has been positioned as a lighthearted jab at Musk, while simultaneously capitalizing on the increased publicity surrounding the feud.

As the rivalry continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how it will impact both Musk’s reputation and Ryanair’s bottom line in the long term. The ongoing exchanges have certainly captured public attention, with many watching closely to see what the next moves will be in this unusual corporate clash.
