UPDATE: The highly anticipated documentary, How We Roll, directed by Anthony Ciancio, premieres tonight at 5 PM at the Recreation Center in Elmwood Park. This film tells the inspiring story of the local bocce ball league, founded by Ciancio’s father, Mike Ciancio, and highlights how this centuries-old game continues to thrive in the Chicago suburb.
The film captures the heart and spirit of the Elmwood Park Bocce league, which has exploded in popularity, growing from just eight teams in 2014 to over 150 teams today, complete with a waiting list. “It’s a lot of pressure tonight, but I’m excited to share this with the community,” Anthony said, emphasizing the personal connection he has with the players and the game itself.
Filmed over several years and delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, How We Roll marks Ciancio’s debut as a full-length documentary director. The film recently won the Best Documentary award at the Oak Park Film Festival, which served as its first public showing, igniting excitement for the hometown debut.
“Being with strangers at a film festival allows you to gauge how well your film resonates,” Ciancio explained. “But tonight’s screening is different; it’s for the people who run the league and play the game.” This intimate connection with the audience adds a layer of urgency and anticipation to the event.
The Elmwood Park Bocce league not only fosters competition but also builds community, with players traveling from across the Chicago area for bocce nights at Centennial Park. “It’s become a pivotal part of our lives,” Ciancio noted, reflecting on how the game bridges connections for many, including those who have moved away from Elmwood Park.
Ciancio’s journey into filmmaking began as a desire to capture the essence of his community. After a successful career as a futures trader, he pursued his passion for film, enrolling in DePaul University’s film school. “I realized I had a unique story right in front of me,” he said. “Documenting the bocce league was a natural fit.”
After facing numerous challenges, including health setbacks and personal milestones, Ciancio completed the documentary in 2023 and is now focused on submitting it to film festivals worldwide. However, the premiere tonight is a moment of pride for Ciancio, showcasing the vibrant culture of the Elmwood Park bocce community.
The screening will take place at the Recreation Center, located at 2 Conti Parkway. As the clock ticks closer to the premiere, excitement builds within the community. “I’ve never seen anything like this in our neighborhood,” Ciancio said, highlighting the unique bond formed through the sport.
Join the celebration tonight at 5 PM and witness the power of community through the lens of bocce ball. This is not just a film; it’s a testament to the spirit of Elmwood Park. Don’t miss it!
