UPDATE: Two Durango entrepreneurs are set to take the stage today at the West Slope Startup Week Pitch Competition, a highly anticipated event that could change the trajectory of their businesses. The competition kicks off at 2 PM and runs until 5 PM at the Durango Arts Center, where they will pitch their innovative business ideas before a panel of nine judges.
Local business owners Mike Milakovic and Matthew Glick are among the six finalists vying for crucial funding and mentorship opportunities. Milakovic, who moved to Durango just over a year ago, will pitch his clean-ingredient snack company, Mighty Mike’s Foods. Meanwhile, Glick, a Durango native, will showcase his software venture MTN FX, designed specifically for the skiing industry.
The stakes are high this year, with last year’s participants receiving a staggering $380,000 in investments from various funds, alongside cash prizes and valuable mentorship. Today’s event promises a similar potential for growth and connection, as both Milakovic and Glick aim to secure not just funding, but also strategic partnerships that could elevate their businesses.
Milakovic expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Durango is just such a great community. The support here has been amazing.” He hopes to gain exposure and constructive feedback from investors and judges alike, which he considers vital for his business’s progression.
Glick echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of networking beyond financial support. “If I meet someone who’s passionate about skiing, that could lead to a new customer or a collaborative opportunity,” he explained. “It’s about creating connections.”
Both entrepreneurs prepared extensively for their pitches, supported by coaching from Startup Colorado, which provided guidelines on addressing market needs and solutions within their presentations. The format allows each contestant just five minutes to connect with the audience and judges.
The competition will feature a distinguished panel, including business experts and representatives from venture funds. Judge Erica Hines, founder and CEO of InnerFrame, noted the event’s significance. “There’s such great energy around Startup Colorado,” she said. “I love being there to cheer on all these founders because I’ve been in their seat.”
As the clock ticks down, Milakovic and Glick, despite their nerves, are ready to showcase their hard work. “I wish everybody luck,” Milakovic said, expressing camaraderie with his competitors. “These events are very nerve-wracking. Whoever wins will deserve it.”
The outcomes of today’s pitches could not only influence the future of these businesses but also galvanize the entrepreneurial spirit within the Durango community. As the competition unfolds, the eyes of aspiring entrepreneurs and local supporters alike will be focused on the Durango Arts Center, where innovation meets opportunity.
Stay tuned for updates as the competition progresses and results are announced.
