UPDATE: The annual MLK Classic at Monroe High School concluded with thrilling victories for Dougherty and Monroe on January 15, 2024. Dougherty narrowly edged Valdosta 46-44, while the No. 7-ranked Monroe Golden Tornadoes triumphed over Early County with a 68-58 win.
The event kicked off with girls’ games before the highly anticipated boys’ matchups. Although the game between Lee County and Bible Baptist (Statesboro) was canceled due to transportation issues, Monroe head coach Michael Hoffpauir praised the competitive spirit of the matches that took place. “The day went well,” Hoffpauir stated. “I think we had great matchups that made each game competitive.”
In the first boys’ game, Dougherty withstood a late rally from Valdosta. The Trojans initially struggled but surged ahead with a solid performance from Mikel Roberts, who led the team with 10 points. Dougherty built a comfortable lead at 29-18 by halftime, thanks in part to a strong 7-0 run to start the third quarter.
However, Valdosta fought back, tying the game 42-42 with just over three minutes left. In a tense finish, Dougherty’s David Burgess scored the decisive points, securing the victory as Valdosta turned the ball over in the final moments. Dougherty improved to 8-9 for the season.
The excitement continued as the Monroe Golden Tornadoes faced Early County. Monroe sprinted to an early lead, dominating the first quarter at 14-4. Brayden Burns shone with 26 points, while teammate Tristen Terry added 17 points. Despite Early County’s attempts to close the gap, Monroe consistently answered back, showcasing their resilience and depth.
With the cancellation of the Lee County game impacting the schedule, Hoffpauir emphasized that the MLK Classic still met its objectives by providing thrilling basketball and fostering community engagement.
Fans and players alike left Monroe High School energized by the day’s events, solidifying the MLK Classic as a must-see highlight of the holiday basketball calendar. With the tournament now concluded, attention turns to upcoming local matchups and the continuing competitive season ahead.
