Local authorities have confirmed that the 53-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was cleaning his shotgun and had left it on his bed. Officers from the Shillington Police Department quickly responded to the scene and discovered the man with a serious injury. He was rushed to the hospital for initial surgery.
According to Corporal Michael Schoone of the Shillington Police Department, an investigation is underway to determine how the shooting occurred. A spent shell casing was found inside the shotgun, prompting police to emphasize the importance of gun safety.
In a statement, Schoone remarked, “This unusual incident was the perfect storm. It was just the right place at the right time, or the wrong time.” He urged gun owners to follow the “cardinal rules” of firearm safety, which include keeping the weapon in a safe direction and ensuring fingers are kept off the trigger.
At the time of the incident, the man and his son were reportedly the only occupants in the home, with two other dogs present as well. As of now, the man’s condition remains unclear, and he is receiving treatment for his injuries.
