Dodgers’ Sasaki Named Primary Closer as Playoffs Heat Up

UPDATE: The Los Angeles Dodgers have confirmed that Roki Sasaki is now the “primary option” for the closer role as the postseason intensifies. Manager Dave Roberts announced this pivotal decision earlier today, stating that while Sasaki will not close every game, he is the team’s leading choice for the ninth inning.

This development comes as the Dodgers prepare for Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies on October 11, 2023. The urgency is palpable, especially after the Dodgers’ shaky bullpen performance in Game 2, where Blake Treinen struggled, allowing the Phillies to claw back into the game. Sasaki’s entry secured the final out, marking his fifth relief appearance since moving to the bullpen in mid-September.

Roberts emphasized the importance of managing Sasaki’s workload, stating, “We have to win X amount of games [to secure a championship], and he’s not going to close every game.” This strategic approach highlights the Dodgers’ need to balance performance with fatigue as they aim for a deep postseason run.

The Dodgers entered the playoffs with significant concerns regarding their bullpen, hoping to leverage their starting pitchers, including Sasaki, Clayton Kershaw, and Emmet Sheehan. With injuries sidelining key pitchers like Kirby Yates and Michael Kopech, Roberts must rely on his remaining options, despite their inconsistent performance in prior games.

“There’s no way to win a postseason without using various pitchers,” Roberts remarked. “You’ve got to use your roster at certain times and kind of pick spots where you feel best and live with whatever outcome.” The Dodgers are focused on winning 13 games in October, and every decision counts.

In contrast, the Philadelphia Phillies are facing a must-win situation, having lost two consecutive games. They will start veteran right-hander Aaron Nola, who had a difficult season but finished strong with eight innings of one-run ball against the Minnesota Twins. Manager Rob Thomson expressed confidence in Nola’s ability to perform under pressure, stating, “Nola has pitched in some really big games for us in the last couple of years.”

Adding to the drama, center fielder Harrison Bader is a “gametime decision” for the Phillies due to a hamstring strain. His absence would significantly impact Philadelphia’s lineup as they fight for survival in this series.

As the Dodgers strategize their pitching and lineup, the emotional weight of each game intensifies. With every pitch, the stakes rise, and fans are left on the edge of their seats, eager to see who will emerge victorious in this critical playoff matchup.

Stay tuned for updates as the Dodgers and Phillies clash in what promises to be an electrifying Game 3.
